During a dark sky observation session, astronomers noted a heat signature inconsistent with local fauna.

By Field Researcher

Location: Galloway Forest Park, Dumfries & Galloway

Date Observed: 2014-08-12

Astronomers using thermal imaging equipment at the Dark Sky Park detected a large endothermic signature moving through the dense Sitka spruce plantations.

Archival Sighting ID: GA-14-12

  • Location: Galloway Forest Park
  • Instrumentation: FLIR Thermal Imaging
  • Thermal Profile: Larger than badger/fox, distinct feline gait

The signature was tracked for 300 meters. Analysis of the stride length indicates an animal of significant power. The Galloway Forest is one of the few places in Scotland with low enough light pollution to consistently track large predators via modern sensors at night.
